On May 15, Tappan Zee High School Principal Jennifer Amos formally announced that Samuel Gould is the Class of 2017 valedictorian and David Lustig is salutatorian.
An engaging leader and National Merit Scholarship winner, Sam has served as captain of the tennis and soccer teams, president of Model UN and Academic League, and editor-in-chief of Tapress, while excelling in the most rigorous courses available to him. He is also Student Council Vice President and played piano in the Jazz Band for the past four years. Sam is headed to Harvard University this fall, where he plans to major in the physical sciences.
David, a National Merit Scholarship finalist, has distinguished himself as a compassionate scholar-leader. He is president of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Science Olympiad team, Math Team Captain, and a Varsity swimmer. Beyond the school day, David counsels teens at his temple. David will attend Northeastern University and plans to pursue studies in economics and math.
When asked how their TZHS experience helped to prepare them for the future, the two were quick to credit their peers. “I’d say that social interactions with a diverse group of peers has been most important,” noted Sam. David concurred, “Class discussions–hearing different views–widens your perspective.”
