Behind the scenes of every Tappan Zee Players production is the Stage Crew. For months before a show opens, a team of dedicated student painters, carpenters, and sound and lighting technicians meet for Wednesday and Saturday work sessions.
It’s a student-driven endeavor. “There are a lot of schools where the parents do this,” says Director Edward Clinton. “But here, it’s all them.”
“I came for carpentry and fell into lighting,” says junior John P., who works on lighting design. “I wish I’d started freshman year. The earlier you start, the more experienced you can become. It allows you to take on leadership roles.”
Assistant Director Natasha D., a senior, also works on lighting design and handles most of the detail painting. “I got involved because someone texted me freshman year and said they needed painters.”
Natasha plans to major in theatrical production and design. As an AP Studio Art student, she was able to use work produced for Stage Crew for a theatre design concentration. “It’s different from any other out-of-school experience…it feels like its own world. It helped me become an individual.”
