Tappan Zee High School’s FIRST Robotics Competition team, SO BOTZ, is featured on Lohud today! Thanks to reporter Frank Esposito and visual journalist Carucha Meuse for interviewing the team Monday afternoon.
SO BOTZ, Team 6911, is headed to its first competition of the 2019 DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE season this weekend–the Hudson Valley Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (HVR)–to compete against 45 teams from across the region, as well as Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, India and Turkey. Last year, the team earned the Rookie Inspiration Award at HVR, the Rookie All-Star Award at the SBPLI Long Island tournament and the Rookie All-Star Award at the 2018 FIRST World Championships Detroit.
It has been an eventful second year for Team 6911 and members have been ambitious in their approach to this year’s challenge. With the support of coaches Karen Connell, Barbara Murphy and Marc Eckert, and more than a dozen mentors, team members designed their entire robot in CAD, fabricated many of its parts using the high school’s 3D printers, X-CARVE and CNC mill, and written more than 3,000 lines of Java code encompassing vision processing and autonomous routes. Take a behind-the-scenes look here. In preparation for this weekend’s tournament, SO BOTZ hosted Quebec’s DROIDE 5865, one of its 2018 HVR alliance partners, for a pre-competition pizza party last night. Teams arrived at RCC today for practice matches; tune in to News12 tonight for interviews with SO BOTZ team members!
The Hudson Valley Regional tournament is a free, family-friendly event that is open to the public. In addition to watching competitions, attendees may also tour the pit areas to check out teams at work!
