More than 100 students and family members attended the Family Engagement Center’s first-ever Family Night Under the Stars at William O. Schaefer Elementary School on Monday night! Although the sky outside was too cloudy for viewing stars through the telescope, families only had to duck into the district’s StarLab inside the gym for a starlit tour of our Solar System. Across the hall, there were hands-on activities from experimenting with craters and Oobleck (neither a liquid, nor a solid) to creating constellations and building Lego rockets.
“We had a wonderful night!,” reports FEC Coordinator AJ Walker. “The aim is to promote active parent involvement in their children’s education in a fun, hands-on way. South Orangetown families should expect to see more Family Engagement Center events like this throughout each school year.”
This special event was organized in collaboration with Instructional Science Coaches Samantha Levine and Brian Newburger. Special thanks to SOCSD faculty members Patty Eyer, Heidi Hill, Sarah Kukla and Sara Nybro, and to members of the South Orangetown Middle School Science Olympiad team and the Tappan Zee High School Science Honor Society, for helping out!
