In order to raise awareness about the William O. Schaefer Elementary School’s cafeteria recycling program and to promote good habits, members of the WOS Earth Kids Club invited their entire school community to join them in packing waste-free lunches this week. The goal of the effort was to reduce the amount of trash generated and sent to the landfills.
“Waste-free lunch programs favor the use of reusable food containers, drink containers, utensils, and napkins,” explained WOS Library Media Specialist Patty Eyer, an Earth Kids Club advisor. “They discourage the use of disposable packaging, such as prepackaged foods, plastic bags, juice boxes and pouches, paper napkins, and disposable utensils. Zero waste is our goal!”
