In partnership with its Board of Education and the Educational Association of South Orangetown, SOCSD offered a retirement incentive earlier this month which yielded the retirements of 18 staff members–teachers, school counselors and school psychologists–and is expected to save the district approximately $500,000 in the 2019-2020 school year. “In replacing these positions, we are looking very critically at what our future needs are, ensure current class size guidelines are maintained, and continue offering and expanding upon a diverse and rigorous academic program that meets the needs of all students and is aligned to our strategic plan,” says Executive Director of Finance & Management Services Alicia Koster.
A concentration of vacancies in the elementary tenure area called for a more expansive approach to recruitment–and so an elementary job fair was held yesterday afternoon. More than 400 candidates who applied through OLAS, the web-based teacher application system, were invited to interview for six elementary tenure-track positions, in addition to elementary leave replacement and long-term substitute positions. The vacancies also offer more opportunities for the district to further one of its recruiting goals, according to Director of Human Resources Jeremy Barker. “In recent years, it has been a priority for SOCSD to recruit candidates that reflect our increasingly diverse community. The response to our job fair was outstanding and the quality of candidates is extraordinary,” he reports.
Elementary job fair candidates who advance for further consideration will continue in the hiring process according to district guidelines, which includes screening interviews, building/department interview committees, demonstration lessons and reference checks. Since other vacancies resulting from the retirement incentive represent a variety of tenure areas, the process for hiring will be initiated by individual schools and proceed according to district guidelines.
