Businessman and former sports journalist Kevin Devaney, Jr. shared his personal and professional journey with Citizen Leadership students at Tappan Zee High School on Friday.

Devaney coasted through high school without much thought about the future before enrolling at Westchester Community College with a part-time sports statistician job at The Journal News. Through a series of lessons learned through challenges, unexpected opportunities and self-reflection, Devaney earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Fordham University and scored sports journalism jobs with with Lohud and MSG Varsity, before landing in his current post, Vice President of Digital Marketing, with LocalLive Networks. His advice for students? “Be resilient and be good to the people around you.”

“My intent was always to bring people in to tell their stories in a way that connects with what we’re doing in class,” explained Citizen Leadership teacher Andy DiDomenico. “I saw a tweet about a young man who had committed to play sports at WCC that Kevin highlighted as an opportunity to really celebrate. It was about perseverance, making the most of opportunities and building relationships, which is so much of what our class is about.”
