The SOCSD Family Engagement Center’s ParentChild+ program is entering its second year! ParentChild+, offered in partnership with Rockland 21C, is a nationally-recognized, research-based, early childhood literacy and parent support initiative designed for families who may not have access to preschool or face other challenges.

The program features twice-weekly, 30-minute home visits with bilingual early learning specialist Rosario Urena over a two-year period. There is no cost to participate and ParentChild+ families receive free books and educational toys. “There is extensive research documenting the powerful impact of early childhood education on children’s cognitive and social development,” notes FEC Coordinator AJ Walker. “The benefits extend beyond kindergarten readiness into adulthood.”

In addition to ParentChild+, the FEC has welcomed 50 new families, on-boarded two new high school FEC ambassadors, begun developing plans for a food pantry and is exploring opportunities to collaborate with community partners on a Halloween Trunk or Treat event for K-8 students and Thanksgiving dinner for SOCSD families in need.
