Tappan Zee Athletics has added a new team to its roster–Girls Varsity Golf–a milestone eight years in the making! Coach Greg Laskow initially aimed to form the team with former Athletic Director Liam Frawley, but lacked sufficient student interest to move forward. Instead, Laskow began coaching an intramural golf club aimed toward girls but open to all to build interest.
Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Bill Pilla was eager to support Laskow’s effort; the team launch, originally slated for Spring 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fast forward to April 12 of this year: the first round of Girls Varsity Golf tryouts kicked off with a dozen athletes spanning grades 7 to 12 ready to join the first-of-its-kind team at TZHS.
For its inaugural year, Laskow’s focus is on developing a competitive program. “The goals are to learn the game, learn the rules of course play, improve technical skills and get ready for next year,” he says.
Congratulations, Coach Laskow and to our Girls Varsity Golf athletes!
