South Orangetown Central School District

Algebra I and ELA 8 summer enrichment programs kicked off at South Orangetown Middle School this week! Math teacher Vincent Piscitelli is preparing SOMS students who are enrolled in Algebra I Honors this fall by providing a preview of various topics within the curriculum. Meanwhile, ELA teacher Kristen Duroy is helping students hone skills, build confidence and enjoy reading and writing through discussions and activities based on highly engaging, short texts.

“I wasn’t sure what I was going to do this summer and didn’t want to stay in the house doing the same thing every day,” says eighth-grader Sabrina G. “I thought it would be good to get a head start on the upcoming school year.”

Duroy sees the summer program as a great opportunity, especially for students who feel like they may have missed something last year. “I’m excited to run these sessions to help students brush up on skills and strategies before the new school year!” she reports.

…and there’s more to come! SOMS is also offering Spanish I, Italian 7, Technology, Social Emotional Learning/Academic Support and additional Algebra and ELA 8 sessions in the weeks ahead. The Technology and SEL sessions are full, but a few seats remain in the other sessions. Interested? Email Principal Chad Corey, Ed.D. at ccorey@socsd.org to register.
