South Orangetown Central School District

“How Can I Be a Good American” is the theme of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 2021 Patriot’s Pen Essay Competition and 19 South Orangetown Middle School students submitted entries!

This morning, Raymond W. DeMeola Memorial VFW Post 1615 members and Chief John Antonucci presented SOMS seventh-grader Brendan K. with a medal, certificate and cash award for his winning essay. All participants were recognized and given certificates and dog tags.

Following the presentations, Post members fielded questions from students, staff and parents about their branches of the military and experiences serving our country.

“We value having our local veterans come to our school so that our students can learn about their experiences in the military. Their service is deeply appreciated,” noted Principal Chad Corey, Ed.D. “We work to connect in-school learning with the world outside our walls and this annual competition and ceremony is a great example of that.”

Congratulations to Brendan and all the participants (most, but not all pictured):
