William O. Schaefer Elementary School students and staff donated enough shelf-stable food items to pack nearly 250 Blizzard Boxes for Meals on Wheels of Rockland County!

“The Blizzard Box effort is an annual school tradition that was started by (teacher) Mary Chaudoir at least 15 years ago,” notes Reading Teacher Elizabeth Barsanti. “We unable to coordinate the drive last year, but were very happy to bring it back this holiday season! This year, we brought in student volunteers from South Orangetown Middle School, as well as teachers’ children, to help check contents and expiration dates.”

Director of Home Delivered Meals Sharon Martini visited WOS yesterday to retrieve the Blizzard Boxes, which are being delivered to home-bound senior citizens this week. Recipients are advised to store the supplies in the event that inclement weather disrupts Meals on Wheels deliveries during the winter.

Martini noted that the number of meal delivery recipients have doubled over the past year and that past recipients especially appreciated the hand-drawn pictures and messages created by students on the WOS Blizzard Boxes.
