South Orangetown Central School District

Closings, Delays & Early Dismissals

Students’ safety and welfare is the District’s primary concern at all times. The decision to close or delay school opening is made by 5:30am. Determinations are made according to conditions within the district. If weather conditions worsen or other situations arise during the school day, an early dismissal decision may be made.

Notifications for closings, delays and early dismissals are sent to staff and families via SchoolMessenger phone and email messages, posted on the District homepage and announced by the following media outlets:

  • Radio: WCBS/880 AM, WOR/710 AM, WFAS/94.3 FM & 1230 AM, WLNA/1420 AM, WHUD/100.7 FM, WBNR/1260 AM, WRCR/1700 AM and WVNJ/1160 AM
  • Television: WCBS/Channel 2, WNBC/Channel 4, FOX/Channel 5, WABC/Channel 7 and News12

Families are strongly encouraged to have a child care plan in place in the event that school is delayed, canceled or dismissed early. In the event of an early dismissal, students will be sent home on the bus they rode to school on. Parents must contact their child’s school with alternate emergency transportation instructions, if needed.

For delay start times, view the School Hours page.
