Our Mission
The South Orangetown Family
Resource Center is part of The Rockland 21C Collaborative for Children and Youth (Rockland 21C). Rockland 21C is a countywide partnership with
children as a priority. Its mission is to ensure the best possible future for every child by building a comprehensive support system that links
family, school and community.
The mission of the South
Orangetown Family Resource Center is to provide a central place where parents, teachers, child care providers and the South Orangetown community
members can find information and support in caring for young children. We believe that it is essential that public schools reach out to parents
and others to ensure that all children develop optimally.
The School of the 21st Century
The Family Resource Center has been created
with support from Rockland 21st Century Collaborative for Children and
Youth.
The idea of Community Schools and Schools of
the 21st Century, bring
programs and services that provide crucial support to families and
promote school readiness in children.
Basic components of the 21st Century
programs are:
-
preschool-age child care
-
before-and-after school and vacation care
for school-age children
-
information and referral services for
families
-
guidance and support for parents
-
networks for child
care providers
-
Health education and informational
services
The Family Resource Center will augment the
core 21C service to meet additional family needs by adding new
components or by bringing existing services under the umbrella of 21C.
The 21C program was conceived by Yale
University Professor Edward Zigler, a principal architect of the federal
Head Start program. In its first ten years, the 21C program
was successfully implemented by more than 500 schools nationwide in
communities of every description including six in Rockland County.
