Homebound instruction is provided to a student on a temporary basis by the South Orangetown Central School District when such student is unable to attend school because of medical or disciplinary problems. If you feel that your child is eligible for homebound instruction, please contact the Pupil Personnel Services Office directly.

Compulsory education age students who are suspended from school will be provided by the District with alternative instruction, which in most cases will be home instruction.

Regular education students who are homebound and unable to attend classes because of illness or injury will be provided home teaching upon receipt of a signed statement from a physician indicating the nature of the student’s illness or injury and stating that the anticipated absence from school is expected to be for at least ten consecutive school days. An anticipated return to school date is also requested. This signed statement should be provided to a guidance counselor or school administrator to facilitate the tutoring prior to the anticipated absence or as soon as possible during the period of absence. The South Orangetown Central School District will provide an appropriately certified teacher to tutor the homebound student within a reasonable time frame.

Regular education students who are hospitalized for supervised medical treatment or care and for whom in-hospital teaching is requested and supported by a signed statement from a physician will be provided home teaching by the district. Such teaching may, however, be contracted with the institution if it is determined by the district to be appropriate.

Special education students, for whom home teaching or in-hospital teaching is requested, with a signed form from a physician, must also be recommended for such teaching by the Committee on Special Education (CSE) if the anticipated absence from school is expected to be ten days or more.

Elementary school students on homebound instruction must receive at least five hours of instruction per week and secondary school students ten hours per week. To the extent possible, homebound instruction should be staggered proportionally throughout the week.

An adult must always be present in the home or sessions may be held in a public location, such as a public library or public school building.

Tutoring is facilitated in coordination with the South Orangetown Central School District calendar. No tutoring will occur on a school holiday or weekend.
