Technology Department Internet Permission Slip for Children Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): The South Orangetown Central School District is very pleased to inform you that we have the ability to enhance your child’s education through the use of the Internet which offers vast and unique resources. The District’s goal in providing this service is to promote educational excellence by facilitating responsible resource sharing, innovation and communication. Internet access will provide your child with the ability to connect to computers throughout the world, as well as with millions of individuals. It provides access to thousands of databases, libraries, and services. The information highway is an incredibly exciting technology, but with access to this educational opportunity also comes responsibility. We expect students to act in a respectful, responsible and legal manner on the network, as they do in any school activity. The district takes precautions to prevent Internet access to materials that may be defamatory, inaccurate, offensive or otherwise inappropriate, as we do when exercising professional judgment in selecting CD ROMS and other computerized information resources. In addition, the district has installed a system to block inappropriate Internet sites. However, on an unregulated, global network, it is impossible to control all materials, and a user may discover inappropriate material. Ultimately, parent(s) guardian(s) are responsible for setting and conveying the standards that their child should follow in using the Internet. The District supports and respects each family’s right to decide whether or not to authorize Internet access. Therefore, access to the Internet by students in grades K-12 will be permitted only upon submission of a signed parent/guardian authorization form (attached). In addition, students in grades 6-12 must agree, in writing, to abide by the District’s regulations set forth in the Acceptable Use Procedures. Please read and discuss the Acceptable Use Procedures with your child. If you agree to allow your child to have an Internet account, sign the Authorization Form and return it to your school. Thank you. Very truly yours,
Ken Mitchell, Ed.D. |
