South Orangetown Central School District

River Road Closure FAQ

Due to demolition work on the Tappan Zee Bridge, River Road will be closed to through traffic for approximately four (4) weeks, starting Tuesday, October 10. The district’s Transportation Office has worked with Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC and our school bus contractors to finalize an alternative transportation plan for students who live in Grand View-on-Hudson.

Please scroll down to view the Alternate Transportation Plan and the Frequently Asked Questions sections, below.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will River Road be closed to through traffic?
According to Tappan Zee Constructors, River Road will be closed to through traffic for approximately four (4) weeks, starting Tuesday, October 10.

What bus routes will be impacted?
Based on our discussions with Tappan Zee Constructors, there will be a direct impact on the following South Orangetown routes only: WOS route #6, CLE route #5 and TZHS route #3.

SOMS route #50, a van, travels through the impacted area, but students will remain on their usual vehicle, with no changes to bus stop locations or pick up/drop off times. However, this route may experience minor delays due to the closure.

Routes WOS #27, CLE #42 and SOMS #38 will not be directly affected, but may experience minor delays due to re-routing of local traffic.

Will all bus stops on the three routes be impacted?
NO. Only bus stops located on Piermont Avenue/River Road starting at Kinney Street in Piermont and heading north will be impacted. An alternative transportation plan has been developed for these students.

All other riders will be picked up and dropped off according to their regular schedule. However, please keep in mind that there may be minor delays due to the re-routing of local traffic.

Why are vans being used to transport students?
Vans are being used to transport students because there is not enough room for large buses to turn around at Bight Lane in Grand View. With the assistance of a flagger provided by Tappan Zee Constructors, vans will be able to safely turn around at Bight Lane.

Why is there a combined WOS/CLE van?
A combined route was created because pickup and drop off times for WOS and CLE students in this area are very close; running a single van will minimize confusion and delays.

Will late buses from SOMS and TZHS be affected?
No; late bus transportation will be provided as usual.
