Learning Center Students are provided a unique opportunity in being selected for participation in this program. They receive the encouragement and assistance of a teacher in a small group setting to help maximize their ability to complete assignments on a timely basis and prepare for successful results in testing situations. Students are either enrolled in the program for a specific period on a cycle day schedule (example, period 5> 1-3-5) or students use the Learning Center as a support system when needed. Students have the option of asking for specific assistance on a given assignment or to receive help in preparing for upcoming tests or planning strategy for approaching a project. The program is designed to assist students with courses they are currently taking and to help them achieve successful results. Math Skills Math Skills is a math course offered in our learning center. It is a non-credit bearing course and the primary purpose of our Math Skills course is to improve the students grade in the math class they are taking concurrently with Math Skills. Students who are enrolled in Math Skills could be working a variety of activities. They can get help on homework assignments for their current math class, clarifying concepts they may be struggling with or they could be reinforcing skills from previous courses that are not strong for them. The course is taught by a Math Department teacher and meets a variety of times and cycle days. Students who are not scheduled for Math Skills can also come into the class during a study hall or lunch period if they would like to get extra help. As with any class, the students who put the effort into the class really can benefit from the help available. Special Education Students Classified Special Education Students are provided an opportunity to work with Special Education and Mainstream Teachers in our new Learning Center Support Program. They receive the encouragement and assistance of a Special Education Teacher to help maximize their ability to complete assignments on a timely basis and prepare for successful results according to their IEP guidelines and modifications. Special Education Teachers continue to serve as case managers in our Learning Center. Students meet with their Resource Teacher in the Learning Center and can get additional content support from Mainstream Teaching Staff. Many of the Special Education Teachers are co-teaching in collaborative classes with Mainstream Teachers and the Learning Center provides the students with additional content support in these areas. Students are scheduled for Resource Support in their program and can come for additional help in the Learning Center during lunch and study hall. Students are encouraged to attend the Learning Center during free periods when they need assistance on their assignments or test preparation. |
