Award-winning author Paul Volponi spent the day at Tappan Zee High School yesterday, where he discussed his journey as a writer with English, Journalism and Creative Writing students. Mr. Volponi is the author of 11 young adult novels, including the American Library Association Award-winning books Rikers High and Black and White, which were inspired by his experience teaching reading and writing to incarcerated teens at Rikers Island.

“Mr. Volponi admitted that he was a reluctant reader as a teen,” noted Library Media Specialist Lois Parker-Hennion, who hosted the visit. Mr. Volponi reviewed one page of writing for students who volunteered to have their work critiqued. “He was very supportive and encouraging,” Ms. Parker-Hennion said.
