To serve the needs of food-insecure South Orangetown families, the District’s Family Engagement Center is launching a food pantry program this month. The initiative aligns with the District’s “whole child” approach to learning.
“Since March, we’ve been serving an increasing number of families who are food insecure,” says Executive Director for Pupil Personnel Services Karen Tesik, Ed.D. “At the same time, we’ve been fortunate to have generous individuals, student groups and community organizations reach out to offer support. The SOCSD Food Pantry will enable us to scale up our operations and shift from that initial crisis response to an established program that can more efficiently and effectively meet needs for the longer term.”
The SOCSD Food Pantry, located in the kitchen of the former Tappan Zee Elementary School at 561 Route 9W in Piermont, will rely on donations of staple food items, such as milk, eggs, bread, rice and canned goods. Donations may be dropped off between 4:00-7:00PM on November 10, 12, 17 and 19.
South Orangetown families in need must register in advance for November pick up by emailing socsdcares@socsd.org or calling (845) 721-6083 by Friday, November 20.
