South Orangetown Central School District

Sent via SchoolMessenger on November 9, 2020

Our District was notified that an individual at William O. Schaefer Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19 this morning. This person was in the building last week. Due to HIPAA and FERPA laws, we cannot disclose additional information.

Although all schools are disinfected over the weekend, WOS will be closed tomorrow, November 10, for building-wide disinfection out of an abundance of caution. No students or staff are to report in person to WOS. Classes will continue online as scheduled. However, meals pre-ordered for in-person WOS students will be suspended temporarily. Transportation for K-2 students who do not attend school at WOS will continue as scheduled.

District administrators are working collaboratively with the Rockland County Department of Health and cooperating with contact tracing efforts. Those who were identified as contacts of the person who tested positive have been contacted by the District and may also receive a call from a Contact Tracer from the Department of Health.

  • For such calls, your caller ID may read “NYS Contact Tracing” or display a phone number with a 518 area code.
  • Please promptly answer these calls.
  • Your identity and the information you share will remain confidential.
  • Please provide Contact Tracers with the information they need to protect our entire School District community.

WOS will reopen for in-person student and staff attendance on Thursday, November 12. (All schools are closed for Veterans Day on November 11.)
