South Orangetown Middle School Challenge Lab students have been designing 3D models of Olympic Parks which can be explored in virtual or augmented reality.
To complete the project, teams are researching the multicultural significance of the Olympic Games in world history and using Google Earth to explore the locations of summer and winter parks across the globe. They’re also learning about the Americans with Disabilities Act and considerations for building inclusive environments that are accessible by differently-abled people. The software students are using, CoSpaces, features a variety of creation tools to build projects which can then be animated with block coding or scripts.
Leveraging a variety of technologies within the design process enables students to identify problems and create new, useful and imaginative solutions. Below is a screenshot of a winter Olympic Park designed by a sixth-grade team, along with the block coding they created to animate their project.
