South Orangetown Central School District staff are always quick to respond when families are in need, but when the Family Engagement Center issued its Super Bowl Challenge earlier this month, it got competitive.
“We challenged the staff in each building to help fill the SOCSD Food Pantry to ensure that participating families would have enough food to make it through the Mid-Winter Recess and all of our schools contributed,” explained FEC Coordinator AJ Walker, adding that the Pantry is currently feeding more than 100 families each week.
Each building had a different category to cover, ranging from snacks to dinner. While every school gave generously, South Orangetown Middle School claimed victory with a total 356 breakfast items–cereal, pancake mix, syrup, peanut butter, jelly, bread, etc.–donated.
“We always come together when there’s a need in our community,” said SOMS Principal Chad Corey. “Helping and supporting each other is an important part of our school culture and it was rewarding for our staff to contribute to this effort.”
Thank you to all our staff members district-wide for their participation!
