South Orangetown Central School District

William O. Schaefer Elementary School second-graders placed their Legacy Stones along the planting beds in front of their school last Wednesday. “They are leaving a piece of their hearts here with us as they move on to Cottage Lane,” explained WOS art teacher Elizabeth Piteo, who first launched the program last year.

Throughout the spring, second-grade students each painted their own beautiful rock with their name and the year to be displayed in front of the school building. This year’s stones line the landscaped area to the right of the main entrance.

“We are so proud of our second graders for all of their hard work, dedication and resilience during their time at WOS! They have set a wonderful example for all of our students,” Principal Sheila Beglin said. “We wish them well as they move to third grade at Cottage Lane next year. I know they will continue to work hard, be kind and take care of one another. Every time we walk past our Legacy Stones, we will think of them. They will be missed!”

Special thanks to SOCES PTA for funding a 2020-21 Teacher Grant to support this new WOS tradition!
