Tappan Zee High School senior Henry Huang was named a 2022 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist today in a release today from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Huang was among the highest-scorers in New York State on the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. A scholar-athlete, Huang has competed on the TZ Boys Varsity Swim team since seventh grade, is a member of the TZ Boys Tennis team and SO BOTZ, the high school’s FIRST Robotics Competition team, and plays violin.
“We are so proud of Henry! This honor is a great recognition of all his hard work over the course of his time here at TZHS and the contributions he has made to our school community,” said Principal Rudy Arietta.
To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must submit an essay and scholarship application which includes information about their academic record, school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards received. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record, be recommended by a high school official and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s performance on the qualifying test.
National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from the pool of Finalists and announced starting in April 2022. All Finalists will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by roughly 220 corporations and businesses for Finalists who meet specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. Finally, approximately 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance 4,000 Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who attend the sponsoring institution.
Congratulations and good luck, Henry!
