South Orangetown Middle School eighth-graders participated in the first-ever Code Con — a tech fair hosted by members of Tappan Zee High School’s Computer Science Honor Society and Computer Science Club under the direction of club advisor and computer science teacher Karen Connell.
Students rotated through seven stations in the SOMS library — each run by club members — demonstrating a variety of computer science fundamentals with hands-on activities encompassing virtual/augmented reality gameplay, robot computing, student-created online games, drone programming, cryptography and cybersecurity.
“Having this opportunity to spark student interest in computer science, and demonstrate how it can apply and connect to other subjects through interactive activities is exciting,” said TZHS Computer Science Honor Society President Kayla N. “It’s rewarding to share what we’ve learned with younger students.”
This #CSEdWeek event aimed to engage student interest in computer science and inform rising ninth-graders about computer science courses and extracurriculars offered at the high school.
