Athletic Training is one of the five new courses that has been introduced in response to student interest at Tappan Zee High School since last spring. This course is currently offered to students in grades 10-12.

Throughout the course, students will learn about basic anatomy and physiology, injuries and illnesses that affect athletes, physical rehabilitation following an injury, basic fitness and nutritional information and how to create an athletic training room with the proper equipment and supplies. “This class is for students who are looking to go into physical therapy, athletic training, or any profession within the field of sports medicine,” said TZHS Physical Education teacher Emily Donovan, who is teaching the new course.

At the end of each week, students participate in hands-on lessons where they have the opportunity to practice common treatments for athletes including wrapping and taping injuries. On Friday, students practiced ankle taping including where to place the pre-wrap and taping techniques that provide support and help to avoid further injury such as a heel-lock and a stirrup.
