Kindergarteners in William O. Schaefer Elementary School teachers Rossana Lorusso and Christina Durcan’s class are learning what it means to be an active member of our community as part of their daily play center time.
In correlation with the Kindergarten social studies curriculum, Lorusso and Durcan created social and emotional play themed boxes that focus on community helpers. The props in the themed boxes were purchased through a SOCES PTA teacher grant. Lorusso and Durcan explained, “The students will have the opportunity to engage in pretend play that will further develop skills to support their vocabulary, language skills, confidence, sharing and how to be an active member of our community.”
The themed boxes feature props that allow students to recreate places within the community so they can role play working in a veterinarian’s office, post office, a florist, a doctor’s office, a dentist and more.
