MTSS/RTI
Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) are integral frameworks designed to enhance educational outcomes by providing systematic and proactive support to students at varying levels of need. MTSS encompasses a holistic approach that addresses academics, behavior, and social-emotional well-being. It ensures a tiered system of interventions tailored to meet the diverse needs of students, promoting early identification and timely support.
The MTSS/RTI referral system differs slightly from school to school based on the developmental needs of the student and the culture of the building and process. Each school follows the general referral system of tiered interventions based on the academic, social emotional and behavioral needs of each student. Tier 1 interventions are intentional instructional practices that teachers use in their classrooms to support all students.
Progress monitoring within RTI/MTSS is a key component that involves regularly assessing students’ academic performance to determine the effectiveness of instruction and intervention. A student who is not successful at one tier of interventions will be referred for more intensive RTI/MTSS support. If a student receiving the highest level of supports is not making sufficient progress, the Child Study Team will review the MTSS/RTI process for further recommendations and/or referral to Pupil Personnel Services.
