The South Orangetown Central School District is a high-performing, public school district which serves residents of Blauvelt, Grandview-On-Hudson, Orangeburg, Palisades, Piermont, Sparkill and Tappan in Rockland County, New York.

Our mission is to elevate, engage and inspire through personalized and exceptional experiences that ensure all students achieve to their fullest potential.

Recent School Recognition

  • Tappan Zee High School named a New York State High Achieving Reward School in 2019-20 and 2018-19
  • South Orangetown Middle School designated an Essential Elements Schools-to-Watch Recognition School in 2015 and re-designated in 2018
  • William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School selected for the Green Schools of Rockland Program in 2019-20

Recent Staff Accomplishments

  • South Orangetown Middle School teacher and Tappan Zee High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse Head Coach Andrew McIntosh selected to serve on the National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee in 2020
  • Tappan Zee High School teachers Karen Connell (Computer Science) and Steven Cohn, Ed.D. (Science) named New York State Master Teachers in 2019

Recent Student Achievement

  • One 2021 College Board National African American Program Recognition Winner
  • One 2021 National Merit Scholarship Finalist and two Commended Students
  • Eighty-eight students earned 2020 AP Scholar Awards
  • Four Class of 2020 graduates and three Class of 2019 graduates earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy
  • Tappan Zee High School’s FIRST Robotics Competition team, SO BOTZ, advanced to the World Championships in Detroit in 2018 and 2019
  • Three students serve on the 2020-21 Alliance of New York State YMCAs 2020-21 Youth and Government Model Cabinet
  • Three students were selected as 2020 New York State School Music Association All-State musicians
  • The 2019 issue of TONES, Tappan Zee High School’s literary magazine, earned 13 Empire State School Press Association awards
  • All Tappan Zee High School Fall 2020 varsity sports teams earned New York State Public High School Association Scholar-Athlete Team status
  • Tappan Zee High School Boys Varsity Soccer player Ciaran Shalvey (’19) was named a 2018-19 All-State athlete and Tappan Zee High School Football player Jason Olszewski (’20) was named a 2019-20 New York State Scholar Athlete of the Year
