Our Community

Nestled on the western banks of the Hudson River, 18 miles north of New York City, the South Orangetown Central School District includes the villages and hamlets of Blauvelt, Palisades, Piermont, Sparkill, Tappan, and portions of Grandview-on-Hudson and Orangeburg. The historical roots of the area reach back more than 10,000 years as home to the people of the Lenape Nation and, more recently the site of several key events in the American Revolutionary War.

Approximately 20,000 residents make their home in our district of quiet, well-maintained neighborhoods. Within its borders and throughout the region are historic sites, corporate centers, state and local parks, centers for art and culture, and outstanding colleges and universities. Our diverse communities attract a substantial number of actors, artists,
educators, executives, first responders, musicians, scientists and writers, many of whom are actively engaged in our schools.

Our Schools

The South Orangetown community is served by two elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. For more than 40 years, SOCSD has used the Princeton Plan to group students by grade (PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12), rather than neighborhood.

As a member of the distinguished Tri‐State Consortium on Education, SOCSD is an exceptional district with high standards for achievement. Our students are regularly recognized for their academic, artistic and athletic accomplishments. South Orangetown Middle School is recognized as an Essential Elements School-To-Watch, an Association of Middle Level Education School of Distinction. Our high school offers more than 20 Advanced Placement courses, as well as the New York State Seal of Biliteracy and Seal of Civic Readiness.
