CLE Bids Farewell to Fifth-Grade Class
Congratulations, Cottage Lane Elementary School fifth graders!
Under sunny skies, the Cottage Lane Chorus kicked off this morning’s Fifth Grade Moving Up Ceremony with performances of the “Star Spangled Banner” under the direction of Music teacher Tyler Leitman.
“At Cottage Lane, it’s important for us to give students voice and choice – more voice in our school and more choices about your learning…We’re not just teaching fifth graders; we’re teaching future SOMS students, future TZ students and, eventually, future adults and community members. We want you to have the skills that successful adults have: to know how to use your voice for good and to make choices in life that match your strengths and passions,” explained Principal Karen Scarth, Ed.D. in her address. “Think about what you love and your dreams, but also keep an open mind and learn because who knows? And look for times, places and situations where you can make things better.”
After certificates of completion were presented to each student, School Counselor Stephanie Chahales announced Matilda S. as the 2025 recipient of the Lori McGrath Character Education Award, which recognizes a student who exemplifies respect, responsibility, kindness and integrity.
The ceremony also included remarks from South Orangetown Middle School Assistant Principal Stephanie Grace, who officially welcomed the incoming sixth grade class!
