Fifth Graders Contribute to Ongoing Data Collection

Students today, scientists tomorrow!

Over the last week, fifth graders (pictured: Siobhán Duggan's class) at Cottage Lane Elementary School have been taking educational field trips to the Hudson River Field Station — located on the Piermont Pier. There, alongside professionals from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, they are gaining hands-on experience not only learning about, but helping to discover more of our local environment. Students rotate through two stations, one of which focuses on the topography and water chemistry of the Hudson River. The other requires them to suit up and work together to catch marine life using a seine net. Back on shore, classes use an identification guide (which they already seem to be well-versed in!) to determine which fish they found — contributing to the Observatory's ongoing collection of abundance and diversity data.
