Important Notice Regarding E-Bike and E-Scooter Use

June 5, 2026

Dear South Orangetown Central School District Families,

The unsafe operation of electronic bikes (e-bikes) and electronic scooters (e-scooters) has become an increasing concern throughout our region and within our school community. As such, we are writing to share an important reminder about student transportation and safety, which we encourage you to review with your child(ren).

Under New York State law, individuals under the age of 16 may not operate e-bikes or e-scooters. In addition, operators who are 16 and 17 years old are required to wear a helmet when operating an e-bike or e-scooter. State law also prohibits the operation of e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks. Additional guidance about the safe and lawful operation of e-bikes and e-scooters can be found in the New York Bicycling Coalition’s E-Bikes and E-Scooters Safety Guide

As we approach the end of the school year and anticipate heavier traffic flow in and around our campuses, please be reminded that the safety of all of our students, staff and families is a shared responsibility. Thank you for your continued cooperation and partnership.

Sincerely,

Brian Culot, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
