PTA Sponsors Seventh Annual Pick a Reading Partner Program
The SOCES PTA kicked off the 7th year of their Pick a Reading Partner (PARP) program last month at William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School with “The Tale of Despereaux” by Kate DiCamillo!
To help foster and encourage a love of reading, every K-5 family was given a copy of the book by the PTA to read together at home and as a school community. Various activities including events with the Mighty Five libraries, local businesses, “Despereaux Day” where students dressed as their favorite character from the book and monthly challenges hosted by WOS Enrichment teacher Robin Courtwright and CLE Enrichment teacher Kerri McBride.
For the Cardboard Castle Challenge, our young architects and adventurers were tasked with building their own cardboard castle inspired by Despereaux Tilling’s grand adventure. Using everyday materials such as recycled cardboard, markers, scissors and glue, students built towers and secret passageways where Despereaux might have explored.
