Second Graders Leave Their Mark at WOS

Second Graders Leave Their Mark at WOS

Second graders celebrated their final days as William O. Schaefer Elementary School students during the annual Legacy Rock Ceremony on Friday!

“As South Orangetown students’ first elementary school, WOS is a special place. Our Legacy Rock tradition gives second graders a tangible way to leave their mark here as they prepare to move up to Cottage Lane,” said WOS Principal Sheila Beglin.

Over the last few weeks, second graders have been painting their legacy rocks during their art classes with WOS Art teacher Liz Piteo, who first began this tradition in 2020. “They put their names, the year and whatever decoration they can in the remaining space,” she noted.

As legacy rocks were placed along the perimeter of the “WOS” garden bed on the front lawn, some students lingered, searching for the ideal spot alone or with a friend, while their classmates eagerly deposited their stones so that they could play.

Wishing our WOS second graders the very best in third grade next year!
