SOCSD Participates in Annual Science Celebration

It's all hands on deck for the 23rd Annual Day in the Life (DITL) of the Hudson and Harbor! Leading up to this year's event, representatives from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) recently visited Tappan Zee High School to talk about the salinity of water — a key component of the data that they would be collecting. Today, student-scientists from SOCSD joined more than 5,000 others throughout the state to learn more about the Hudson River and New York Harbor.

With the Piermont Pier serving as the Day's classroom, Brian Newburger's science classes broke off into groups to explore different stations. From seining to sediment coring, turbidity to chemistry and observing physical conditions, each activity helped to create a picture of our local environment. DITL is coordinated by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Estuary Program and operated in partnership with its Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve and the LDEO.
