SOMS Chapter of Jeunes Amis du Français Honor Society Inducts 45 Members

Forty-five South Orangetown Middle School students were inducted into the Jeunes Amis du Français Honor Society on June 1!

To kick off the ceremony, eighth grader Anika K. played “Sonatine” on the piano. Following remarks by SOMS World Language teacher and Team Leader Marie-Laure Spatz, Principal Chad Corey, Ed.D. and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Rudy Arietta, Ed.D., 14 returning members were recognized for their continued dedication to the French language and 31 new members were officially inducted into the honor society after meeting the membership requirements. To become a member, students must maintain a 90 (or more) average and must have shown a deep interest in the French language and culture by completing five community service hours related to the program through events such as “Bonjour Day” and volunteering at the annual We the People event.

When discussing the World Language department during his remarks, Arietta noted, “I don’t think our World Language teachers get enough credit. They teach you grammar, vocabulary, tenses, history, politics, art and the culture of the language. They are truly versatile teachers and the students being recognized tonight are proof of their hard work and dedication.”

Once inductees took their pledge, seventh grader Allison Z. played “La Vaguelette” on the violin. In another display of our talented student-artists, the artwork in the brochure was produced by seventh graders and new inductees Olivia F. and Liam M.

Congratulations to:
