SOMS Salutes Eighth Graders at Advancement Ceremony
South Orangetown Middle School celebrated the advancement of its 218 eighth-grade students at its 2025 Moving Up Ceremony this morning!
The SOMS Band, under the direction of Music teacher Robert Bennett, welcomed students, staff and guests with performances of “Pomp and Circumstance,” “The Star Spangled Banner” and “The Great Locomotive Chase.”
Class President Alice Y. reflected on shared memories and her hopes for the journey ahead. “As we level up to high school, I hope we bring everything we’ve learned at SOMS with us—the lessons, the laughs, the late-night study grinds, all of it. These past few years helped shape who we are, and honestly, we’ve come a long way. High school’s going to be a whole new experience, but I hope we keep showing up for each other and don’t forget the friendships that got us through hard times. No matter where we end up, SOMS will always be part of our story,” she said.
In his remarks, Principal Chad Corey, Ed.D. noted the following academic achievements of the the eighth grade class:
- 95% of eighth graders earned a high school credit in a World Language
- 45% took Regents Earth Science
- 41% earned a high school credit in either Studio in Art or Design, Drawing and Production
- 27% took Algebra Honors
- 32% of the class was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society
“Today, we celebrate your accomplishments. Tomorrow, we look forward to the opportunities and challenges that await. Embrace the future with confidence, curiosity, and a commitment to becoming the best version of yourself,” Corey advised. “As you move on to high school, continue to be kind, support one another and believe in your ability to make a difference.”
Following the presentation of more than 20 special awards, Corey formally presented the eighth graders to Tappan Zee High School Principal Melissa Luciano as the TZHS Class of 2029.
Congratulations and good luck to our incoming ninth-graders!
