WOS and CLE Celebrate Children's Mental Health Awareness Week

This week, William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School are celebrating Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week through a variety of activities  and themed spirit-wear days.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and WOS School Counselor Tennille Marino and CLE School Counselor Stephanie Chahahles hosted age-appropriate activities that focused on mindfulness throughout the week during recess. On Monday, students at WOS enjoyed the beautiful weather and engaged all of their five senses to participate in mindfulness scavenger hunts. “Organizing recess activities during Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week helps our K-2 students learn how to recognize and express their feelings in healthy ways,” said Marino. “I thought a mindfulness scavenger hunt would be a fun and engaging way for our students to practice being present, noticing their surroundings, and calming their minds, which supports emotional regulation and overall mental well-being.”

At CLE, Chahales and intern Emily Dolinsky brightened up the gloomy skies on Tuesday by having students draw colorful images and positive messages within the outdoor classroom to practice mindful coloring. “As a school counselor, I think it’s important to recognize Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week to raise awareness, provide support and promote positive mental health practices among students, staff and families,” explained Chahales. “Recognizing Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week is a proactive way for schools to foster a healthier, more supportive learning environment—where every child feels seen, heard and valued.”

Next Friday, SOMS and TZHS will recognize Mental Health Awareness Month by hosting Wellness Days with activities that focus on stress reduction, physical and mental wellness and building community.
