Reopening 2020

Updates

Three Parent Information Sessions were held August 11-12 and covered 100+ questions submitted by parents in advance and during the live webinars. Videos of the Parent Information Session webinars are posted on the SOCSD Events YouTube channel. View the Q&A here.

On August 7, Governor Cuomo announced additional steps school districts must take as part of their reopening planning process. By August 14, school districts must post their remote learning plan and how it addresses equity issues, their testing plan, and their contact tracing plan. By August 21, school districts must host three discussions with parents and at least one discussion with teachers.

Parents are asked to complete and submit the Transportation Request Form (English | Español) to indicate whether or not their child requires transportation for the 2020-21 school year. Deadline is Friday, August 15.

Governor Cuomo extended the ability of school boards to meet virtually through September 4.

SOCSD submitted its 2020 School Reopening Plan to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) on July 31. View the District’s Reopening Plan (HTML | Google Doc), Reopening Plan At-A-Glance overview and Reopening FAQ #1. A final version of the reopening plan will be posted on this page by August 14, with more detailed resources to follow. Please keep in mind that our plan is subject to change according to evolving NYSED guidance; local, state and federal guidelines; and regional health indicators.

Background

In May, South Orangetown Central School District administrators, educators, health and safety experts, mental health clinicians, transportation planners, communications staff joined the County-Wide Reopening Work Group convened by Rockland BOCES to plan for the reopening of Rockland County schools, in the wake of the state-mandated school closure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic which began on March 18 and remained in effect through the end of the 2019-20 school year.

On June 17, the District launched its own task force and subcommittees to focus on reopening planning and logistics specific to South Orangetown schools for the 2020-21 school year. Subcommittees will be chaired by administrators to cover the following topic areas: Curriculum and Instruction, School Health and Safety, Pupil Personnel Services, Facilities, Food Service, Transportation, Technology, Staff Relations, Athletics and Communications.

The task force and subcommittees will be meeting through the summer, with the goal of presenting a reopening plan to the Board of Education by August 1.
