CANDLE prevention educators staff a drop-in center at Tappan Zee High School Tuesday through Friday, 10:00am-2:00pm. Founded in 1982, CANDLE provides prevention education and resistance strategies to youth and their adult allies, and support programs for young people at risk. The CANDLE Center is available for students to come by and talk about any life situation that is impacting their lives or to escape to a quiet place during lunch.

Runs immunization and medical clinics for children ages 5-18 and adults, including those who are uninsured, underinsured or on Medicaid.

Starting in the 2019-2020 school year in New York State, any non-medical reason to not get all vaccinations, is no longer accepted. Religious exemptions are no longer allowed. This new law requires all students in public, private, and religious schools from daycare through grade 12 to be immunized. For more information about the NYS exemption, and what your child needs to attend class, visit the NYS Department of Health website.

WIC: Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants and Children

WIC is a federal program for participants who qualify based on financial and medical or nutritional need. This program serves women who are pregnant, mothers of babies up to six months old, breastfeeding mothers of children up to 12 months old, and children under the age of five. Checks are issued to purchase supplemental nutritious foods, such as milk, cheese, eggs, cereal, juice, fruits, and vegetables. Fruit and vegetable checks are also accepted at some local farmers’ markets. Breastfeeding education and support is provided by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants. Registered dietitians, nutritionists and breastfeeding peer counselors are also on staff. WIC sites in Rockland are located in Spring Valley, Monsey, New Square, Haverstraw, and Nyack.
