South Orangetown Central School District

Beginning this school year, Cottage Lane Elementary is now offering instrumental music lessons for third-graders during the school day. In previous years, instrumental music lessons were offered to students in third grade as part of an early morning enrichment program prior to the start of the school day.

Prior to the start of the school year, 165 students enrolled in music lessons to play instruments including the alto sax, baritone, bassoon, cello, clarinet, flute, french horn, oboe, percussion, string bass, trombone, trumpet, viola and violin. These lessons are offered on a six-day cycle during the first and second periods of each class day.

“We are so excited to have 165 students playing an instrument and 123 students in the third grade chorus this year. We restructured our music program for third grade so our students are able to participate in chorus and instrument lessons during their specials period. This allows all students to participate without having to come before school to play their instrument, and they also don’t have to miss class time to participate in chorus,” explained CLE Principal Karen Scarth. “This helps to make our music program more equitable and accessible for all students. We look forward to seeing how all of our third grade musicians progress across the year!”
