South Orangetown Central School District

Over the last two weeks, William O. Schaefer Elementary School Art teacher Liz Piteo has hosted art shows for first grade students and their families!

First grade artists in Jennifer Fanning’s class proudly showed off their artwork that was displayed in their classroom as well as in the hallways on Monday afternoon. “The purpose of the art show is to celebrate their efforts, while giving students the opportunity to develop their skills. Students sharing and interpreting their artwork is also part of the NYS Education Department Learning Standards for the Arts, so it’s great to be able to connect both the creating and presenting standards together. Through the art shows, they are also learning about how to respect each other’s work and appreciate art,” said Piteo.

Since September, students have been learning about various artists and art styles and have practiced using different art mediums including watercolors and oil pastels to create their original pieces. “My philosophy is that the process is the most important aspect of art. It’s all about them learning new skills and techniques and not so much about the final product,” Piteo explained. “Families being here to see their children’s work shows that they support that process as well. I am so grateful for all of the teachers, administrators and families that support the arts.”
