Tappan Zee High School senior Sean Berrigan has been named a candidate for a Special Scholarship to be awarded by Crum & Forster, a New Jersey-based insurance company, through the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

“What a great honor for Sean and for TZHS!” said Principal Rudy Arietta. “He has made a positive impact on our school community in and out of the classroom. This is well-deserved recognition.”

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, roughly 800 students who scored highly on the PSAT/NMSQT (but are not National Merit Scholarship Finalists) are awarded Special Scholarships offered by corporate and organizational sponsors each year. Students submit an entry form through the sponsor to be considered for a Special Scholarship. Selection is made by National Merit Scholarship Corporation staff based on sponsor criteria, such as: children of employees, residents of a certain community or students who intend to pursue a particular college major or career. Although amounts vary by sponsor, scholarships may be one-time payments ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 or renewable awards for undergraduate study ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 per year.

For additional information regarding Special Scholarships, including the list of sponsors, view the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program Student Guide.

Congratulations, Sean!
