South Orangetown Central School District

Six Tappan Zee High School seniors–Nicholas B. (Troop 2055), Joaquin S. (Troop 2055), Matthew T. (Troop 2037), Mark D. (Troop 2055), Daniel A. (Troop 2037) and Cooper S. (Troop 2055)–have earned Eagle Scout rank, a prestigious milestone achievement for Boy Scouts!

In order to earn their Eagle Scout rank, Boy Scouts must meet rigorous requirements, including completing a service project for their community.

For his project, Nicholas rerouted a section of the William O. Schaefer Nature Trail and added both a new walking deck and a bridge after hearing about issues of flooding on the trail from the Orangetown Parks Department.

Joaquin built an octagonal gazebo on a circular platform for the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church in Tappan as a way to give back to the church he began attending in first grade.

Inspired by a “walk audit” of the Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail he participated in with the TZHS Safe Routes Club, Matt installed navigational signs on the trail which list distances to key locations, such as the high school and libraries.

Mark worked with the Orangetown Historical Museum and Archives to install a new, larger flagpole and patio area, refurbish benches and clean the museum grounds. The project took 579 hours to complete and he was responsible for supervising nearly 30 scouts.

As a committed Blauvelt Sons of Italy volunteer, Danny built a memorial patio for the group’s lodge on Van Wyck Road and sold customizable bricks to members to make their mark.

To express his gratitude for the support he and his family have received over the years, Cooper designed and installed a patio and garden at the Orangetown Jewish Center.

Each of the Eagle Scouts reflected that their Boy Scout membership inspired them to volunteer through organizations including local fire departments and Meals on Wheels. All intend to continue this spirit of service in their lives beyond graduation.

“Being able to help someone in need is important in scouting and now I am able to do that in my daily life,” said Danny.

Congratulations to all!
