SOCSD is gearing up for Summer 2023 capital work!
Here’s a quick update:
Playground Replacement: The William O. Schaefer Elementary School main playground area will be closed starting Saturday, June 24 through late August for a complete renovation, including new equipment and sitework. Signage will be posted onsite for the duration of the construction period.
Asbestos Abatement: As part of the ongoing, districtwide renovation of accessible bathrooms, asbestos abatement will be occurring at Cottage Lane Elementary School and Tappan Zee High School starting Monday, July 3 through Saturday, July 15, 2023. Both buildings will be closed to all staff, students and visitors during this period. In compliance with legal requirements, signage will be posted at all entrances of both buildings while this work is in progress and strict adherence to all safety protocols will be closely monitored.
Pool Repairs: Repairs to the South Orangetown Middle School pool began last month and are scheduled for completion by Friday, August 18.
Clock/Public Address/Lockdown Systems: The installation of new clock/public address/lockdown systems at South Orangetown Middle School and Tappan Zee High School, which began this spring, is slated for completion in late August. Upgraded systems will be installed at William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School during Capital Improvements Bond Project Phase I construction.
Security Camera Upgrades: The upgrades and additions to security camera upgrades funded in the voter-approved 2023-24 school budget will start this fall.
Smart Schools Investment Plan: The District is enhancing school connectivity by replacing outdated cabling to meet evolving instructional technology demands. Construction is anticipated to begin this summer at CLE and WOS and be completed by May 2024; work at SOMS and TZHS will be performed after school hours starting in September.
Capital Improvements Bond Project: The District is awaiting approval from the New York State Education Department for Phase I construction (WOS and CLE).
As we move forward with needed improvements to our buildings and grounds, we need our community’s support to ensure safe and timely project completion. Please obey posted signage and do not enter construction areas during closures:
- WOS Main Playground closed June 24 – late August
- CLE and TZHS closed July 3-15
- SOMS Pool closed through August 18
