South Orangetown Central School District

First Day of School

South Orangetown schools celebrated the arrival of students for the start of the 2023-24 school year this morning! Administrators and staff were all smiles as they welcomed students ranging from kindergartners to seniors–and those new to our community.

At William O. Schaefer Elementary School, families stopped to pose for quick first day photos before their children headed indoors. At Cottage Lane Elementary School and South Orangetown Middle School, administrators greeted students as they eagerly scampered into their buildings.

Forty-two Tappan Zee High School Peer Leaders, all seniors, shared tips as they led groups of ninth graders on building tours. Throughout the school year, Peer Leaders meet with their designated groups to check in and ease their transition to high school.

Helping freshmen feel comfortable is especially important to this senior class, who entered the high school during the 2020-21 school year, noted Peer Leader Co-Presidents Ella and Victoria.

“Our goal is to make everyone feel welcomed and that they have people to go to if they need anything,” Ella said.

Victoria added, “High school isn’t scary. We’re here for them.”

Wishing our students, staff and families a fantastic year!
