This week, William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School are celebrating Red Ribbon Week with themed spirit days and daily activities to encourage healthy habits.

On Monday, William O. Schaefer Elementary School Counselor Tennille Marino pushed into classrooms to talk about healthy choices that students can make each day. “The 2023 theme for Red Ribbon Week (Be Kind to Your Mind) is a reminder that by making healthy choices, our K-2 learners are demonstrating how much they value themselves, their overall health, their local community and their future. This week at WOS, we will be concentrating on different healthy habits including limiting screen time, healthy eating, managing stress, developing good sleep habits and moving our bodies. Red Ribbon Week is full of spirit celebrations, information and activities to deliver messages about the importance of developing and maintaining long lasting healthy habits at an early age,” said Marino.

For the “Healthy vs. Unhealthy Habits” activity, students worked together to determine if certain habits including too much screen time or television, exercising, choosing kind friends and washing your hands were healthy or unhealthy habits. Once they decided which habits were healthy, they sorted them into the different categories of healthy choices including eating healthy foods, drinking healthy drinks, being safe, taking care of your body, taking care of things and places and being responsible.
