South Orangetown Central School District

South Orangetown Middle School eighth graders participated in the third annual Code Con to celebrate Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10)! Over the course of two days, nearly 50 members of Tappan Zee High School’s Computer Science Honor Society and the FIRST Robotics Team, SO BOTZ, hosted seven different stations in the SOMS library with hands-on activities and informative presentations.

“It’s an excellent opportunity for the eighth graders at SOMS to engage in a variety of activities related to computer science. It’s also a chance for the Computer Science Honor Society members to give back to their school community and share what they have learned in their computer science classes so far. We hope it encourages them to try out some of the computer science classes and extracurriculars that we offer at TZHS,” said TZHS Computer Science teacher and 6-12 Instructional Math Coach Karen Connell.

Eighth graders rotated between several stations that focused on topics including virtual/augmented reality, drones, cryptography, artificial intelligence, student-designed online games and presentations about the SO BOTZ team and the computer science electives, pathways and opportunities that are available at TZHS.
